A brief history of the area
Vredenburg was founded in 1875 as a Dutch Reformed Church congregation to serve the neighbouring communities around Hopefield. Due to a protracted dispute between two farmers over a natural fountain near Vredenburg, it was once named Twisfontein. After the agreement was reached, the town was given the name Vredenburg, which means "peace" in Afrikaans.
