Hermanus at a glance
It's no surprise that Hermanus has expanded in size and popularity over the last several years given its unrivalled scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, upmarket boutiques, and numerous adventure activities. Just 115 kilometres southeast of Cape Town, Hermanus can be found along Walker Bay on the south coast of the Western Cape.
The area, often recognized as the "Whale Capital of the World," is well-known for its Southern Right whale watching from July to December. The Humpback and Bryde whales, penguins, Cape seals, seabirds, and dolphin pods all make Walker Bay their home at this time. Restaurants like Bientang's Cave Restaurant are popular spots to have a meal while watching for these incredible creatures.
The most recent and fastest-growing residential district in Hermanus is thought to be Sandbaai, which is located on the coast at the entrance to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The region is a popular spot for retirees. Buyers like estates such as Fernkloof Estate and Hemel en Aarde Estate for their safe living conditions and lifestyle options.
Westcliff, one of the well-liked coastal communities near the new harbour, is home to both prestige, upmarket properties as well as more affordable, seafront homes. You can discover top-notch dining establishments in the new harbour and watch the neighbourhood fishermen at work as they unload their fresh catch on the pier. The Westcliff shoreline has some of the best fishing areas, where fish like Red Roman, Steenbras, Galjoen, and Cob will nibble on your line.
A brief history of the area
Hermanus Pieters (c. 1778-1837), a teacher who came to Cape Town in 1815 to teach Dutch to farmers in Caledon and the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, was the inspiration for Hermanus, previously known as Hermanuspietersfontein.
Pieters herded cattle from Caledon to the seaside during the summer months since there was good grass and fresh water there. Eventually, the rest of the rural community made it their new resort town.
Today, Hermanus offers over 40 top-notch restaurants, over 30 exceptional vineyards, and several more entertainment options.
