Glenwood at a glance
Within the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, nestled south of Bulwer lies Glenwood. The area is a middle-class suburb with mixed property types that comprise mainly freehold homes with fewer apartments and sectional-title townhouses. The architecture is assorted with a lot of homes dating back to the early 50s, extending from its colonial-style mansions to conventional and modern homes which all contribute to the average prices of properties in the suburb. Glenwood boasts a well-established neighbourhood with spectacular views and great schools, making it a wonderful place to raise a family.
A brief history of the area
Much of Glenwood's history can be seen in the magnificent architecture that still lines its streets today including the beautiful Victorian residence known as Roberts House. The building which was built in 1898, is currently home to the Phansi Museum. The building originally belonged to Esther Roberts, one of South Africa's first female anthropologists.
Another wonderful piece of Glenwood's history lies in the architecture of Glenwood High School. Initially called the Day Continuation School, which was located on Smith Street in 1910, it was decided that due to the increasing number of students the school should move to a larger location. In 1915 the school moved to the Technical College building and changed its name to Durban Technical High School. As the student number continued to climb, it was agreed that more land would be purchased surrounding the school to make way for more buildings. In 1934 the school was officially ready and the name was changed from Durban Technical High School to Glenwood High School.
